A sacred stop on your Aruba road trip

Nestled in a rocky niche of Seroe Preto near San Nicolas, the Lourdes Grotto took shape in 1958 when Father Erkamp gathered a group of devoted parishioners to build a shrine honoring this saint. History enthusiasts, religious visitors, and adventurers familiar with France’s Hautes-Pyrénées department will recognize its striking resemblance to the location where the Virgin Mary first appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. As you might have guessed, this detail was intentional. A document found in the National Archives of Aruba reveals that the venue aimed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of that appearance in the Gallic country.
Besides, it is worth noting that the grotto’s design and existence reflects Aruba’s deep-rooted catholic faith, which dates back to the colonial era and remains strong today. In fact, every February 11, on this saint’s feast day, locals walk in a solemn procession from San Nicolas’ Santa Teresita Church to attend a special Mass at this site, surrounded by nature and a serene, spiritual atmosphere.

Beyond the tourist bustle of Oranjestad and Noord, the Lourdes Grotto is a must-see on any Aruba road trip. Why? Because it is the perfect starting point for an experience that highlights the charm of its southern region. Some tourists have previously struggled to find it along Weg Seroe Preto, but a keen eye with a handy GPS or paper map will easily spot a 700-kilogram statue surrounded by candles, fresh colorful flowers, and the blue sign that reads “LOURDES”.
Want to know the quickest way to get there? First, it is recommended to rent a 4×4 or ATV, as they are ideal for traveling on uneven and narrow roads. Hertz, ACE Rent a Car, Top Drive, and Justin’s Car and ATV Rental are some options suggested by the island’s official tourism office website. Once you have that sorted, you can start your engines and get ready for an epic Aruba road trip.
According to Google Maps, travelers in the capital city should follow John G. Emanstraat street and Adriaan Laclé Boulevard to get to Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard. Next, continue on Route 1 towards Savaneta. Finally, turn onto Brazil street and Weg Seroe Blanco, heading to Weg Seroe Preto. For more detailed directions, click here.

After your visit, do not miss other natural attractions nearby, such as the Quadiriquiri and Fontein caves, the idyllic Boca Prins Beach, and San Nicolas, known as the “Sunrise City”. In the latter, the visitor centre is great for activity suggestions. However, if you prefer to walk and get lost in the colorful streets of this town, try testing your navigation skills to find the Museum of Industry, ARTISA Gallery, or SPACE21.art. Nothing is more fun than a little bit of travel adventure!
