A travel bucket list essential
There’s one place you need to get to know once you arrive in Aruba, and it’s the majestic Fontein Cave. Read along to learn some of the things you can expect to see in your visit.
Taking the time to visit this magnificent cave will add up significantly to one of the best trips in your life. You’ll leave your excursion feeling super connected with nature and the humans that populated this earth before us. You truly can’t leave without experiencing one of the best things to do in Aruba.
How to get there
Fontein Cave is one of the notable caves on the island, and it’s known for its historical and geological significance.
Like many of Aruba’s wonderful sites, the cave is situated in Arikok National Park. This park is very easy to find. It covers the eastern side of the island’s countryside. You can easily get there by taking a shuttle or rental car from the airport or by taking a free ride if you’re staying at Ocean Z Boutique Hotel.
Beware of the fact that you must pay an admission fee when you get to the park. The fee varies depending on whether you’re a resident or a non-resident of Aruba, as well as your age.
You can find fees, maps, and other helpful info on Aruba National Park’s website. Their flyer states that the fee to get in the park for the whole day is 5 Aruban Florins or 2.78 USD per adult.
What to find there
At Fontein Cave, you can find ancient Arawak Indian petroglyphs. These are rock carvings made by the indigenous people who once inhabited the island. The petroglyphs provide insight into the island’s pre-Columbian history.
You can learn a lot about the people’s culture and way of life way back when they lived in caves such as this one.
By visiting Fontein Cave, you’ll get to witness the natural formations within, such as stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is accessible to the public and often visited as part of guided tours or self-guided exploration within the national park.
At Fontein Cave, you’ll be surrounded by a unique atmosphere with dim lighting, mysterious echoes, and an overall sense of tranquility. The cave’s interior features intriguing rock formations and patterns that will transport you to another dimension. Plus, you can snap some breathtaking pictures while inside.
Don’t forget to keep an eye out for bats! These little creatures inhabit the cave and can often be seen hanging from the ceiling or flying around. They play an essential role in the cave’s ecosystem and contribute to seed dispersal and insect control. Also, they won’t mess with you if you don’t mess with them.
