What is Aruba Hi-Winds?

Aruba Hi-Winds emerged on a warm afternoon in 1986, after an energizing windsurfing session. Friends Anthony Blok and Ruben Croes, passionate about the sea, had a clear goal. They aimed to create a vibrant, well-structured gathering that would attract water-sport enthusiasts and adventurous minds alike to Aruba. The success of the first edition sparked an annual tournament that steadily secured the island’s place on the global map.
Aruba Hi-Winds grew into a true staple in the Caribbean. According to a 2006 article published in 2016 by The News Aruba, the event joined the Professional Boardsailing Association (PBA)’s 1988 World Tour. Moreover, a series of renowned athletes like Björn Dunkerbeck, the first to break the 62 mph barrier; Jutta Müller, who earned multiple world titles thanks to her outstanding skills; and Britt Dunkerbeck, the famed “fastest woman on the pro circuit”, all have joined the list of participants over the years. Today, it brings together more than 200 competitors from different parts of the globe and, sometimes, serves as a launchpad for new talent.
When and where will Aruba Hi-Winds 2025 take place?
The next Aruba Hi-Winds will run from Wednesday, May 28th to Monday, June 2nd this year. The show will occur at Fisherman’s Hut (also known as Handicuri Beach), a rugged coastline featuring the island’s most coveted waves. Since 1997, organizers have introduced special categories for beginners and amateurs to sharpen their techniques in a themed setting, so you will see a little bit of everything. This also means anyone can sign up as a participant. However, since the registration deadline has passed, you will need to check the official website for future opportunities.
Fisherman’s Hut sits a short walk from key landmarks such as the lively Palm Beach and peaceful Bubali Bird Sanctuary, so it is easy to access. To get there from Oranjestad, simply take Socotorolaan, Koningstraat, and Paardenbaaistraat toward Lloyd G. Smith Blvd (Highway 1B). Then, follow J.E. Irausquin Boulevard in Noord until you reach your final stop.
