The 1924 opening of the Lago Oil & Transport Company Ltd. refinery transformed San Nicolas, once a modest rural and fishing town. Afro-Caribbean, South American, and American workers soon arrived to get down to work. In parallel, they also built schools, hospitals, and community centers. The outcome? An intercultural tapestry that felt natural on an island shaped by mixed ancestry and home to over 90 nationalities.
